What is DAXXIFY?
Perhaps you have enjoyed the age-defying results of Botox for years or are considering toxin injections for the first time.
Naturally, you want a beautiful result and likely want those results to last a long time. With the introduction of DAXXIFY, a groundbreaking new cosmetic drug from Revance Therapeutics, patients can achieve younger-looking skin for up to six months. DAXXIFY™ (Daxibotulinumtoxin) is the newest injectable drug for facial expression lines. It received FDA approval for treating glabellar lines, or frown lines between the brows, in September 2022. Like Botox, it works by interrupting the nerve signal in the muscle. The treated facial muscle relaxes, causing the overlying skin to be free of wrinkles.
Is DAXXIFY better than Botox? You decide.
Botox and DAXXIFY share similarities, but there are key differences. Both drugs effectively treat dynamic wrinkles, which form on the skin due to repeated facial muscle movement. Both are administered via injection. Both have the same mechanism of action as they temporarily relax the facial muscle by blocking the nerves that signal movement. The difference is in how long the results last. Most patients find that Botox results last three to four months on average. With DAXXIFY, those same youthful results can last up to six months. Why does DAXXIFY last longer than Botox? To understand this, we need to look at the manufacturing process. Like Botox, DAXXIFY contains a highly purified form of botulinum toxin. Yet it also contains a novel stabilizing peptide that makes it last longer in the skin. Harnessing the power of Peptide Exchange Technology™, DAXXIFY is the first and only peptide-stabilized neuromodulator for wrinkles.
DAXXIFY is the longest-lasting Botox alternative on the market. Results from DAXXIFY last up to 180 days, while Botox (and equivalents like Xeomin and Dysport) typically last around 90 days before needing a touch-up. Therefore, patients who choose DAXXIFY over Botox enjoy a younger-looking face and the confidence that comes with it for a long time to come. They will also save time in the treatment chair, potentially reducing their office visits to just twice annually, rather than coming in every three months for a touch-up. That is a 50 percent time savings and twice the longevity of results!
DAXXIFY is best suited to individuals with dynamic wrinkles. It is FDA approved for use in the 11 lines between the brows and may also be used off-label for forehead creases and crow’s feet around the eyes. The ideal candidate does not smoke, is in good overall health, and has no active infection at the treatment site. In addition, patients must not be pregnant or breastfeeding when they receive DAXXIFY. Your injector at New Jersey Plastic Surgery will listen to your concerns and ask you to make different expressions (think smiling, raising your eyebrows in surprise, or furrowing your brows in anger) to determine if neuromodulators are appropriate.
They will answer your questions and speak with you openly about the pros and cons of your different treatment options. If this is your first time addressing wrinkles on your face, they may suggest starting with short-term solutions like Botox. That way, you can get a sense of what kind of results you might achieve with DAXXIFY without a long-term commitment. If you like what you see, then you may ask to try DAXXIFY once your Botox wears off a few months later. Candidates for DAXXIFY can receive their treatment on the same day. Before you start DAXXIFY, avoid herbal supplements such as Vitamin E, NSAID medications, blood thinners, smoking, and alcohol use for several days, as these can increase the risk of bleeding.
Procedure
Your injector may initially numb the area with ice or anesthetic cream upon request. Most patients find the DAXXIFY procedure is relatively quick with minimal discomfort. As you make different facial expressions, your injector will strategically inject the product into the affected facial muscles. The injection process only takes a few minutes.
DAXXIFY has no downtime. Aside from minor redness, swelling, and occasionally bruising, there is nothing to stop you from getting back to life as usual. You are free to return to work and social activities immediately afterward. Strenuous physical activity can resume 24 hours later. The aftercare for DAXXIFY is similar to Botox. There is nothing special you need to do other than avoid Vitamin E, blood thinners, and NSAIDs for a few days.
Nicotine and alcohol are strongly discouraged in recovery as they can lead to complications. Avoid lying down for four hours after receiving DAXXIFY. Do not massage the treated area. It takes several days for DAXXIFY to take effect. Within ten days, you should notice decreased muscle activity and fewer wrinkles in the treated area. In a study, 80 percent of DAXXIFY users continued seeing results four months post-treatment. Half maintained their results for six months. The results last so long that patients are advised against repeating the treatment for at least three months. Come back to New Jersey Plastic Surgery for a maintenance visit once your treated wrinkles reappear, but no sooner than 90 days after your last DAXXIFY procedure. That said, you are welcome to come back to the office sooner to speak with your injector about your results or to discuss other aesthetic concerns you might have.

The injections are easily tolerated. You will feel a few quick pinches as they insert the fine-gauge needle. Numbing cream and ice are available to make the process more comfortable.
All minimally invasive procedures carry risks, including Botox and alternatives such as DAXXIFY. In studies, less than 1 percent of patients had an adverse event. The most common unwanted side effects are headache, eyelid ptosis, and facial paresis. Seek medical attention immediately and alert the office in the rare event you experience any acute side effects such as difficulty breathing or swallowing.
If you’ve tried Botox in the past, you may know how many units you needed to achieve your desired result. Yet DAXXIFY units are not equal to Botox units. Your injector at New Jersey Plastic Surgery will determine the ideal number of DAXXIFY units needed during your in-person consultation.
DAXXIFY is not a permanent wrinkle treatment. The effects typically last four to six months. Come in for a maintenance visit when you notice your treated wrinkles returning, but no sooner than 90 days after your last DAXXIFY injections.
It is not safe to have elective medical or cosmeceutical procedures while pregnant or nursing. While the ingredients in DAXXIFY are unlikely to enter the bloodstream, there is not enough safety data to support use during gestation or lactation.

DAXXIFY is expected to cost more than Botox since the results last significantly longer.
