If facial expression lines are making you look older than you would like, the good news is there are many cosmetic injectables at our practice that offer great results, including a new filler explicitly designed for wrinkles on highly expressive areas of the face.

Dr. Barry DiBernardo at New Jersey Plastic Surgery is among the first providers to offer RHA Redensity in New Jersey. His Montclair practice offers patients customized wrinkle treatments and uncompromising results. You CAN reduce facial expression lines without looking frozen!

What is RHA Redensity?

As one of the most expressive parts of your face, your mouth is subject to signs of early aging. With age, volume loss and thinning skin cause wrinkles and fine lines to become etched around the mouth and lips.

Until now, the preferred injectable treatment for expression lines has consisted of products like Botox, which limits muscle movement to relax wrinkled skin. Paralyzing the muscle is obviously problematic as your mouth needs to move to smile, speak, and chew. Hyaluronic acid fillers can plump wrinkles around the mouth, but HA tends to break down faster in areas with repeated facial movement.

First approved by the FDA in December 2021, this is a brand new take on dermal fillers. This new-to-market injectable is the first of its kind to treat expression lines around the mouth. Teoxane Laboratories, a Swiss company, developed RHA to solve the issue of treating perioral wrinkles while still permitting the patient to make natural facial expressions. RHA is flexible and soft, so it bends with the skin while temporarily reducing wrinkles.

Since this RHA dermal filler is newly released, it is not widely available in New Jersey. Dr. DiBernardo is proud to be one of the state's first providers to offer RHA fillers. His Montclair plastic surgery group is proud to offer this as part of its roster of breakthrough anti-aging treatments.

RHA vs HA: What's the Difference?

Dermal fillers have been a mainstay of non-surgical wrinkle treatments. Since RHA Redensity is more flexible than ordinary HA dermal fillers, it is less stiff, so it moves with your skin, reducing expression lines while still allowing your face to move.

HA Dermal Filler

There are many types of dermal fillers. Some of the most popular brands, such as Juvederm and Restylane, are made from hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a bio-compatible substance that gets injected into the skin to fill static wrinkles and enhance the facial contours for a more youthful, aesthetically pleasing appearance.

RHA Dermal Filler

Resilient hyaluronic acid volumizes wrinkled areas while still allowing natural movement. This makes it ideally suited to expressive areas of the face that show signs of aging, specifically around the mouth. The primary ingredient in RHA is sodium hyaluronic acid, a chemical that is bound together with a substance called BDDE. The formulation has a malleable, gel-like texture, so it fills wrinkles without hindering the ability to make facial expressions.

What else sets them apart?

Perhaps the most important distinction is the type of wrinkles each filler treats. Traditional HA fillers work best on static wrinkles, which remain embedded in the skin even when the face is motionless. However, RHA fillers are the first-and-only dermal filler for dynamic wrinkles, which develop due to repeated facial expressions.

Previously, neurotoxin injections (think Botox and Dysport) were the preferred treatment for dynamic lines. While highly effective, these injectables were limited in terms of what areas they could treat. Generally speaking, neurotoxins treat facial lines on the upper portion of the face, including the forehead, between the brows, and the outer eye corners.

RHA has bridged a gap in the market, allowing New Jersey Plastic Surgeon, Dr. DiBernardo to inject the product into creases around the mouthā€”considered one of the most expressive parts of the face.

Benefits of Dermal Fillers

With RHA fillers, New Jersey patients can enjoy the benefits of youthful skin with fewer wrinkles.

Most importantly, they can smile, frown, speak, and laugh without looking frozen. While a skilled plastic surgeon like Dr. DiBernardo can administer fillers and neuromodulators to ensure a natural look, RHA's flexible gel formula makes it easier than ever to achieve the desired results. This is a major advantage for our New Jersey RHA Redensity patients who do not want it to be obvious that they had a treatment done. Finally, the results of RHA dermal filler are long-lasting as the ingredients resist degrading due to repeated facial movement. Clinical trials show more than 66 percent of patients maintained their results at the one-year mark.

RHA dermal fillers can accomplish the following:

  • Improve recessed scars
  • Enhance facial symmetry
  • Restore volume to aging skin
  • Smooth the appearance of wrinkles

The Ideal RHA Redensity Candidate

RHA Redensity is for patients aged 22 or older. Women must not be pregnant or breastfeeding. Certain health conditions are contraindicated. If you have sores or an active infection at the injection site, you may not be able to receive treatment.

  • Nasolabial folds
  • Perioral wrinkles

Consultation and Preparation

During your consultation for RHA Redensity New Jersey Plastic Surgeon, Dr. DiBernardo or a member of his staff will listen to your concerns and ask you to make different facial expressions. They will also answer any questions you might have about dermal fillers.

If you have had a reaction to hyaluronic acid fillers in the past, let them know. They can suggest alternatives in the event dermal fillers are not right for you.

Most patients can receive cosmetic injections on the same day as the consultation. Avoid alcohol, anti-inflammatory medications, and Vitamin E for several days before and after your treatment.

The Procedure

RHA contains 0.3% lidocaine hydrochloride, a numbing agent that reduces injection site pain. Ice or topical numbing cream may also be applied to your skin before your treatment begins. Your aesthetic specialist at New Jersey Plastic Surgery will carefully inject the product into the desired areas.

A clinical study demonstrated that 80.7 percent of subjects showed a clinically significant improvement in perioral wrinkles. The anti-aging effect persisted for 12 months in 66.5 percent of subjects.

In addition to the option of using a topical numbing agent, this product contains the drug lidocaine which is an anesthetic agent that eases injection site pain. Most patients find the injections are minimally painful and easily tolerated.

Like most dermal fillers, RHA dermal fillers are a temporary wrinkle treatment. The effects can last a year or more. One to two treatments may be recommended for optimal results.

RHA is not a Botox alternative. Botox treats lines on the forehead, between the eyebrows, and crow's feet near the eyes. RHA treats dynamic lines around the mouth. Together, they provide comprehensive results for treating dynamic wrinkles on various areas of the face.
